Blum Popup

Theme: Blum · Section type: Overlay group section

The Newsletter popup opens on top of your store to collect email sign-ups or promote an offer. You choose when it opens, how often it comes back, and whether a small sticky button stays on screen after customers close it.

Note: The Newsletter popup is in the Overlay Group of the theme editor, so it works on every page. It replaces the old Popup section. The theme editor warns that the old Popup section will be deprecated, so build your popup in the Newsletter popup. For an age check popup, see Blum Age Verification.

What you can do

  • Turn on the popup and edit its content
  • Choose when the popup opens and how often
  • Add a sticky popup button
  • Change the popup layout and size
  • See what customers see
  • Look up every setting
  • Fix common problems

Turn on the popup and edit its content

  1. In the theme editor, find the Overlay Group at the bottom of the left sidebar.
  2. Click Newsletter popup. If it's not there, click Add section in the Overlay Group, then click Newsletter popup.
  3. Edit the content blocks. The popup comes with 2 Group blocks: one holds an Image, and the other holds a Subheading, a Heading, a Description, and a Newsletter form.
  4. To add more content, click Add block inside a group, for example a Button or a Countdown timer.
  5. Click Save.

Tip: The content blocks work the same way as in the Custom section. See Blum Custom Section for each block's settings.

Note: In the theme editor, the popup stays open while the section is selected, so you can edit it. To test when it opens, open your store in a new tab.

Choose when the popup opens and how often

  1. Click Newsletter popup.
  2. Under General, select When to Show:
    • Reaching the Footer: opens when customers scroll near the bottom of the page.
    • After Add to cart notification: opens after customers close the add-to-cart notification or cart drawer.
    • Delay after page loaded: opens after the time you set in Delay, from 0 to 15 seconds.
  3. Select a Frequency to set when a closed popup comes back: After each browser session, Until visitor clears cookies, or After a set number of days. With a number of days, set After from 1 to 30 days.
  4. Optional: check Show on home page only and Show only for non-login visitors.
  5. Click Save.

Note: Frequency is hidden with After Add to cart notification. With this trigger, the popup opens once per browser session.

Add a sticky popup button

The sticky popup is a small button that stays on the screen after customers close the popup. Customers click it to open the popup again.

  1. Click Newsletter popup.
  2. Under Sticky Popup, check Enable Sticky Popup.
  3. Enter the button Text, for example "Get 20% off".
  4. Select an Alignment (Left or Right) and a Position (Middle or Bottom).
  5. Optional: set a Custom text color and a Custom background color.
  6. Optional: check Show close button to add an × that lets customers hide the sticky button.
  7. Click Save.

Change the popup layout and size

  1. Click Newsletter popup.
  2. Under Layout, select a Direction: Vertical (content stacked) or Horizontal (content side by side).
  3. Set Alignment, Position, and Gap.
  4. Under Size, drag Width to set the popup width, from 10 % to 100 % of the screen.
  5. Click Save.

What customers see

  • Popup: opens in the middle of the screen over a dark overlay, based on When to Show.
  • Closing: customers close the popup with the close button or by clicking the dark overlay. It doesn't come back until the time set in Frequency has passed.
  • After subscribing: a success message appears in the form, and the popup doesn't open again.
  • Sticky popup: after customers close the popup, the sticky button appears. Clicking it opens the popup again. With Show close button, the × on the button hides it.
  • Mobile: with Horizontal direction and Vertical on mobile checked, the content stacks on phones.

Troubleshooting

The popup doesn't open on my store.
The popup doesn't open again after a customer closes it, until the Frequency time has passed. It also doesn't open for customers who already subscribed. Test in a private browser window. Also check Show on home page only and Show only for non-login visitors.

The popup with "After Add to cart notification" never opens.
It opens after customers close the add-to-cart notification or the cart drawer. Check how the cart opens in Theme settings > Cart.

I can't find the old Popup section settings.
The old Popup section is being replaced by the Newsletter popup in the Overlay Group. Set up your popup there.

Where do I find the people who subscribed?
In your Shopify admin, go to Customers. Subscribers from the popup form are subscribed to email marketing.
