How to Create a Back in Stock Campaign with eComX Themes. 3rd app suggestion included.

Written by eComX support

Running out of stock doesn't have to mean losing customers. With eComX themes, you can set up Back in Stock alerts to capture customer interest when products are unavailable and notify them the moment items are restocked. This guide walks you through two approaches: using eComX's built-in theme features with free Shopify tools, or using Shopify 3rd app for a more advanced, automated solution.

In this article, we will mention XFLOW Back in Stock Alert app. Install XFLOW and secure 50% OFF for 2 months all paid plans - code XFLOWECOMX

Create a Back in Stock Campaign Using Built-in Theme Features

This method uses eComX's native Back in Stock block combined with free Shopify apps (Shopify Email and Shopify Flow) to create a complete back-in-stock notification system. No paid apps required.

Add the Back in Stock Block to Your Product Page

  1. From your Shopify Admin, go to Online Store > Themes > Customize.

  2. Navigate to your Product page template.

  3. In the Product details section on the left sidebar, click Add block.

  4. Select Back in stock from the block list.

  5. Once added, the Back in Stock block will automatically appear on products or variants that are out of stock. It displays a sign-up form with Email and Variant fields, allowing customers to opt in for restock notifications.

  6. Customize the block's appearance (text, colors, layout) directly in the theme editor to match your store's branding.

  7. Click Save.

How it works: When a customer submits the Back in Stock form, their information is sent to your store's email inbox. You'll use this information to set up targeted restock notifications in the next steps.

Update Customer Information in Shopify Admin

After receiving back-in-stock sign-up emails from customers, you need to add their information to Shopify's Customers section so you can segment and target them later.

  1. Go to Shopify Admin > Customers.

  2. For each customer who opted in, add the following tags:

    • backinstock: a general tag to identify all back-in-stock subscribers.

    • The product name (e.g., Classic White Tee), this tag distinguishes which specific product the customer requested a restock alert for.

  3. To update customers in bulk, prepare a CSV file with the necessary customer information (name, email, tags) and import it via Customers > Import.

Tip: Using a product-specific tag allows you to create separate notification campaigns for each product, ensuring customers only receive alerts for the items they're interested in.

Create a Back in Stock Customer Segment

Customer segments let you group customers who opted in for the same product's back-in-stock alert, so you can send targeted emails.

  1. Go to Shopify Admin > Customers > Segments.

  2. Click Create segment.

  3. Define your segment using customer tags. For example, to create a segment for customers waiting for the "Classic White Tee" to restock, use the filter:

    • Customer tags contains backinstock AND Customer tags contains Classic White Tee

  4. Name your segment descriptively (e.g., "Back in Stock - Classic White Tee") and click Save.

  5. Repeat this step for each product that has back-in-stock subscribers.

Create the Back in Stock Email

Use the free Shopify Messaging app to create your restock notification emails.

  1. Go to Shopify Admin > Apps > Messaging.

  2. Click Create email.

  3. Search for the Back in stock email template to use as a starting point. This template is pre-designed with restock messaging and product imagery.

  4. Customize the email content:

  5. Save your email as a draft.

Important: You need to create a separate email for each back-in-stock campaign (i.e., one email per product). This ensures each notification is specific and relevant to the customers who requested it.

Create a Back in Stock Workflow with Shopify Flow

Use the free Shopify Flow app to automate the back-in-stock notification process.

  1. Go to Shopify Admin > Apps > Shopify Flow.

  2. Click Create workflow.

  3. Set up the workflow trigger, condition, and action to send the restock email to the correct customer segment when a product is back in stock.

Pro tip: You can use Sidekick (Shopify's AI assistant) to help you quickly create the flow. Simply describe what you want, such as: "Create a workflow to trigger when the inventory of [Product Name] is restocked, send the back-in-stock email using [Email template] to customers in the [Back in Stock - Product Name] segment."

  4. Activate and test your workflow.

Important: Similar to emails, you need to create a separate workflow for each back-in-stock campaign. Each workflow corresponds to a specific product and its associated customer segment and email.

  • Activating the campaign: Navigate to XFLOW > Campaigns, open your campaign, assign workflows, set the status to Active, and optionally exclude specific products.
