Shine Breadcrumb

Theme: Shine · Section type: Section for article, blog, collection, collection list, page, search, and product templates

The Breadcrumb section shows a short trail of links, such as Home > Collections > Rings, at the top of a page. It tells customers where they are in your store and lets them go back a level in one click.

Note: You can add the Breadcrumb section to the article, blog, collection, collection list (list-collections), page, search, and product templates. It isn't available on the homepage, cart, or other templates. Most of these templates already include it at the top.

What you can do

  • Add the breadcrumb to a template
  • Change the breadcrumb colors
  • See what customers see
  • Look up every setting in "Settings reference"
  • Fix common problems

Add the breadcrumb to a template

  1. In the theme editor, open the template where you want the breadcrumb, for example a page template.
  2. In the left sidebar, click Add section > Breadcrumb.
  3. Drag the section to the top of the template, below the header.
  4. Click Save.

Tip: The breadcrumb is most useful right below the header. Customers expect to find it there.

Change the breadcrumb colors

  1. In the left sidebar, click Breadcrumb.
  2. Under General, choose a Color schemes option.
  3. Click Save.

Tip: Use the same color scheme as the section below the breadcrumb, so the two look like one block.

What customers see

The trail always starts with Home. Each level is a link, and the current page is shown in a lighter color at the end. The trail depends on the page:

  • Product page: Home > collection > product. The collection appears only when customers open the product from a collection page. Otherwise the trail is Home > product.
  • Collection page: Home > Collections > collection. If customers filter the collection by a tag, the tag is added at the end.
  • Collection list page: Home > Collections.
  • Blog: Home > blog. A tag filter is added at the end.
  • Blog post: Home > blog > post title.
  • Page: Home > page title.
  • Search results: Home > Search.
  • Phones: long trails wrap onto a second line.

Troubleshooting

I can't find Breadcrumb in the Add section list.
The section is available only on the article, blog, collection, collection list, page, search, and product templates. It isn't available on the homepage or the cart.

The product page doesn't show the collection in the trail.
The collection appears only when customers open the product from a collection page. When they open it from the homepage, search, or a direct link, the trail is Home > product.

The breadcrumb is missing on a page.
The default page template doesn't include a breadcrumb. Open the page template and add it with Add section > Breadcrumb. Also check that the section isn't hidden (the eye icon in the left sidebar).
